First held in 2001, the Fun in the Sun Team Challenge brings together teams from Caloundra and neighbouring longboard clubs for a day of friendly competition, great waves and plenty of beachside atmosphere. Whether you're chasing bragging rights or just soaking up the vibe, it’s always a highlight on the Malibu Club calendar.

The event is a tag-team format where the top two scores from each surfer contribute to the team total, along with the bonus “double whammy” wave for each team. From 2001 until 2017, each five-surfer team consisted of 1 x Open, 1 x U18, 1 x O50, 1 x Female and 1 x Old Mal. In 2018 and 2019 the format changed to four-surfer teams with fewer restrictions on team composition, while the scoring format remained the same.

After a pause during the COVID years, Fun in the Sun returned in 2024 with a new one-day, three-person team format and no restrictions on team membership. Over the years, some of Australia’s best longboarders – including World and Australian title winners – have competed in the event, alongside plenty of first-timers and social surfers, all enjoying the same great day of longboarding.
